The profession of architecture, and how it interacts with various social systems – politics, economics, the environment, and so on. These overlapping systems are one reason why architecture is so interesting, but also why it is so challenging.  Legal: The procurement route known as ‘Design and Build’ has been under intense scrutiny in recent years. Using evidence and sources, write a critical evaluation of why Design and Build has become controversial. Why is it criticised? Why is it popular? What alternatives are there?  Practice: In times of crisis, opportunities are sometimes presented to change the way in which architecture is practiced. Identify a contemporary challenge to the profession, which might be economic, political, material etc, and write an appraisal of what opportunities to improve architecture it presents. Use evidence and sources in your appraisal.  Justice: Write a critical reflection on the following statement: “Architecture can be an effective tool for social justice”. You may use examples from the history of architecture, or from contemporary events, and you may argue for or against the statement. You must use evidence and sources in your statement.  Ecology: Write a critical appraisal of one aspect of architecture’s role and responsibility in the battle against climate change. You may use examples from the history of architecture, or from contemporary events. You must use evidence and sources in your appraisal.  Collaboration: Write a critical appraisal of a project which demonstrates a particularly positive example of collaboration between an architect and another agent in construction. This could be a client, a member of the public, another professional consultant, a manufacturer, artist, etc. In your own words, reflect on what, if any, lessons can be taken into your own practice in academia.  Each section should be a minimum of 300 words in length.
