The Look of Noir

Watch the movies and read the files before you get started. Movies: The Killers  (Robert Siodmak, 1946);  The Asphalt Jungle (John Huston, 1950) Start a new thread for each question. 1. How does the lighting in the next sequence from The Killers contribute to the films story and realism? How does it contribute to the stars’ glamour? 2. Identify a sequence from The Killers or The Asphalt Jungle and explain how the lighting contributes to the storytelling, realism, and glamour in a manner that corresponds to one or more qualities of film noir. These noir qualities might include: The femme fatale who draws men to their doom The morally ambiguous hero The cynical tone and pessimistic ending The inequities of modern America and/or the heartlessness of the city Anything else that you see as a defining feature of film noir.
