“‘No Homo’ – Dat Shit Cray!”  So the phrase “that shit cray” (referring to something as crazy) was made popular by Kanye West as a line from the song “Ni**as in Paris” from his 2011 collaboration with Jay-Z. West is part of the cadre of contemporary rappers (late 2000s to present) who have used the term ‘no homo’ while playing with hyperfeminine gender cues in their performance of Black masculinity through fashion and aesthetics. The role of artists has historically been to create the conceptual options for the masses to think outside of the box and to envision new ways of being. With this in mind, how does the practice of ‘no homo’ limit the artistic potential of those rappers who use the term?
