food in cultural context

Our second class project gives you the chance to identify some of the many connections between food, culture, and identity. Just as with the first project, you’ll be expected to make short presentations, but this time, your analysis should target a single food or dish. How, for example, does sourdough bread have anything to do with the gold rush and the American frontier? What makes a Jamaican beef patty Jamaican, and a Cornish pasty Cornish? When, how, and why, did pasta come to be associated with Italy? What is the cultural-historical significance of your favorite family dish or feast day? Presentations should be reinforced by visual aids (think PowerPoint). For a more specific breakdown of how these projects will be graded, see the corresponding rubric. Not all of the examples have to be used in this document or powerpoint
