Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Throughout the unit, we have read Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. You have learned about the mysterious plot, complicated themes, several complex family conflicts, modern complex characters, the 1970s in middle- America as the setting; and the use of layered literary devices, such as figurative language, symbols and theme. In order to write a literary analysis, you will go through a  series of steps, including the writing process: (Prewriting, Drafting Revision and Editing and Publishing). Read the literary analysis questions below and use one as a guide for your 5 paragraph essay.  Read and annotate the selected question very carefully to be sure that you understand the meaning and how to answer it correctly. Refer to the Key Terms to Know slides. Essay Questions:  A. Everything I Never Told You is an excellent example of contemporary fiction. Use textual evidence, such as quotes, paraphrasing or literary commentary to illustrate the behaviours, thinking and emotions of Lydia Lee. Demonstrate Ng’s characterization of Lydia Lee and comment on the role she plays within her family.   B. Celest Ng offers her readers several complicated themes to consider in the novel Everything I Never Told You. Select one theme and demonstrate how it is explored throughout the plot of the novel. Remember to compare and contrast those themes that are concerned with opposing ideas.  Success Criteria:  evidence of the writing process: submitting all 3 steps of the assignment – an essay will not be accepted without this evidence (thesis,  outline, final essay) maximum 5 paragraph essay (introduction, 3 supporting arguments and a conclusion) the use of no more than 3 quotes, correctly cited and explained (commentary/analysis) use of transitional words MLA format, including in-text citations and works cited page any form of plagiarism or over-translation will result in a mark of 0 (zero)! Literary Analysis Essay Writing Process:  Step 1: Thesis statement  Use the Essay Guide document and 6 step thesis writing method from Unit 2 to compose a complete declarative thesis statement.  Step 2: Essay Outline A complete outline in point form including: a hook, introduction, thesis – road map, 3 supporting arguments (with quotes) and conclusion. Use the Essay Guide document for details. Step 3: Literary Analytical Essay- Final draft (Due: April 16) Refer to the Literary Analysis Essay document for details. Submit a complete 5 paragraph essay in MLA style, including works cited page. Refer to the MLA Formatting Example document for the correct format.
