Summary & Evaluative Response Essay The article, “The Coddling of the American Mind” published in the September 2015 issue of The Atlantic, developed into Greg Lukianoff”s and Jonathan Haidt’s best selling book, The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure. Their book was named one of the best books of 2018 by notable media & news sources like the New York Times and Bloomberg LP. Praise from Bloomberg LP founder, Michael Bloomberg read, “Rising intolerance for opposing viewpoints is a challenge not only on college campuses, but also in our national public discourse. The future of our democracy requires us to understand what’s happening and why–so that we can find solutions and take action. Reading The Coddling of the American Mind is a great place to start.” The New York Times in their praise argued, “Lukianoff and Haidt notice something unprecedented and frightening…the consequences of a generation unable or disinclined to engage with ideas that make them uncomfortable are dire for society.” These are interesting and somewhat disturbing comments by the Times & Michael Bloomberg given that from the reading, discussing, and thinking we’ve done in our course module, Critical Thinking and Writing, we know that an essential part of becoming & being a critical thinker is to explore and be open to other ways of thinking, other opinions, different perspectives from our own.
