For this assignment, you will write a five to seven page essay (2000-2500 Words) that answers the question below. This must be between five and seven full pages of text, not including your cover page. This paper is worth 150 points and it must be uploaded to this module in either PDF or MS Word format and/or pasted to the submission screen  by the end of the day on April 20 (I suggest to do both).   This paper must be computer-generated, double-spaced, with standard one-inch margins and 12 pt. font (Times New Roman). Please refer to the Essay Guidelines handout on Blackboard for more specific instructions regarding style and organization. First review the primary and secondary sources that are posted on Blackboard (See PDF files in folder titled Sources for Long Essay) Then use these sources as evidence to support your interpretation of the following prompt:   Compare and contrast the civil rights reforms of the Reconstruction Era (1865-1877) with the Civil Rights movement of the twentieth-century to 1968. Who influenced the major changes in public policy during these periods? How did they do so? Be specific. What were those changes? Discuss some of the social tensions and public backlashes to those changes. In your essay, be sure to discuss the significance of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Be sure to discuss the various U.S. Supreme Court decisions that changed civil rights laws. Also, mention the turning points in civil rights history. There are various examples of events and policies that shaped the direction of civil rights reforms in the United States. Do not overlook them. For example, a basic essay on this topic must include Brown v. Board of Education (1954), as well as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Yet, there is more.  What series of events influenced these cutting edge policies? How did grassroots activism, judicial activism and congressional activism influence events in these periods? Do not just state the facts. For this essay you must analyze the events and turning points in a comparative analysis.    There are ten sources in the source folder on blackboard for this essay. The first four sources offer primary and secondary accounts on the impact of Reconstruction Period into the late 1800s. The second six sources offer primary and secondary information about the Civil Rights Movement of the twentieth-century. In your essay, use these sources to give examples of real life experiences that support your argument. Here, I am looking for your ability to blend the primary sources into your discussion. You must read these sources carefully. There are ten basic sources for this essay. You must use them all. They are loaded with examples that you can use throughout your essay.  Document 1; (Reconstruction) Document 2; (Reconstruction) Document 3; (Reconstruction) Document 4; (Reconstruction) Document 5—1940s Document 6—1950s and 1960s Document 7—1960s Document 8—1963 (Primary: Birmingham’s Racial Segregation Ordinances) Document 9—1964 and 1965 Document 10—1965 When citing these sources, put the Document number in parenthesis followed by a comma and then the page number in the source where you took your information. For example, when you cite Document 1, maybe page 14 in your essay, the citation will look like this (Document 1, 14). When you cite Document 2, perhaps page 55, the citation will look like this (Document 2, 55). All ten of these sources will be cited in this way to keep things simple. You need to use all ten of these sources in your essay, and they all need to be cited in this way, as you use them. The first step in this process is reading the sources and taking notes. You need to form an essay outline and a thesis statement. More instructions will be provided in the instructions module for this essay.
